A recent meeting of current Pro7 Plus drivers agreed that a
lower cost version of the present engine would encourage
earlier participation by those building new cars so a
prototype was used to compare the standard 13B as fitted to
Series 6 models, minus turbo and equipped with the category
spec Link computer.
Whilst the rebuild cost is very similar this action would
permit existing engines to be used without rebuilding until
worn out effectively eliminating around $6-$7000 from a
start up budget. This option has met with favourable
response and will be ratified at the coming AGM of the club
where it may also phase out the Renesis (RX8) rotor in
favour of just using the standard S6 ones.
With only half of the Pro7 Plus groups 16 cars competing
this season, fans could be forgiven for the appearance of
dwindling interest in this premiere category of RX7 Racing.
Although tight trading conditions are affecting
discretionary spending and accounts for many of those
absent, Pro7 Plus is using this time to strengthen its
position. Upgrades, rebuilds and general refinement of cars
is happening whilst these drivers focus on their
professional lives, however with the news that has quickly
circulated regarding the intended engine spec, serious
effort is being applied to at least front at some of the
remaining rounds. Pukekohe on the 14/15th February looks to
be the strongest showing for the season to date.
